Unless you have close access to a river, creek, or pond like Native Americans did, you’re going to have to use a tub. Go to your local all-purpose mega-store (yeah, you know which one I’m talking about, but I’m not going to give a commercial endorsement) and pick up a large plastic tub or trash can with a lid.

The tub should be large enough to completely submerge your hide (or hides) under water. Be sure that you place the tub in a location that is not too hot or in direct sunlight; a shady porch or under a shade tree is good. Before you put water in the tub, place your hide(s) in the tub and put two or three heavy weights on them to keep them completely submerged (the plastic-covered weights from your weight bench will work nicely; you know you never use it anyway.). A little air at this point would not be good; keep the hide completely underwater until the whole hide is ready to be stretched. O.K. now add the water and snap the lid on securely (curious dogs, you know).
